The Water lily (above) grows in shallow lakes and slow moving rivers. The leaves float on the surface of the water because of air bubbles in them. The roots anchor them to the mud or sand below.

Irises (above) dig their roots into the soil at the side of the lake.

Cattails(above) also dig their roots into the soil at the side of a lake. They need shallow and slow moving water.




Plants may have trouble getting enough carbon dioxide and light underwater, but many plants have special ways to get what they need to live.
